Rotary in London
October was also filled with many opportunities to engage with the London Rotary community. The second weekend of the month, an orientation was hosted for all of the Rotary Scholars in the greater London area. I believe it is 25% of all Rotary scholars attend schools in the London district. A few even go to LSE as well! We discussed how to engage with our host clubs, each other, and things to be aware of throughout our time living in the UK. It was great to start to get to know them before the District Conference the following weekend.
The third weekend of October was the London District Conference. It was a packed day full of speakers and club members having the chance to get to know each other. Topics of the different speakers ranged from approaches to alleviating homelessness in the City of London, to British identity and community pride, along with working to protect the environment. There was one speaker who spoke about approaches to distributing sustainable menstrual hygiene products to girls in low-income countries to keep girls in school longer, which I was very much interested in as someone so interested in maternal and child health.
I am always impressed by the way the Rotary Mission really does translate across boarders, oceans, and cultures. I enjoyed seeing the district in action, with so many engaged members so excited to be back to an in-person district conference and being able to spend time with fellow Rotary scholars I had met the previous weekend.
